Dog-Friendly Pubs in Essex
The Black Buoy in Wivenhoe, Essex is a great place to visit with your dog whilst you’re out walking.
The pub is thoroughly dog-friendly and welcoming, with its cosy feel and happy staff.
It’s just tucked a few paces away from the river frontage, yet is a much better destination than the Rose & Crown on the quayside.
There is always a great selection of real ales on hand pump – featuring lesser-known breweries, so it’s always great fun to try something new.

There’s good food too if your walk coincides with mealtime – Rusty and I just shared a sneaky bowl of chips on our visit yesterday !
It’s really great to be able to relax with your dog after a bracing walk by the river – and the wooden floors mean there’s no worry if your dog’s been squelching in the mud at low tide. Rusty particularly appreciated his bowl of fresh water and dog biscuits – so you can be sure that your dog will enjoy their visit.

Wivenhoe is a good starting point for circular walks that start alongside the River Colne – or just a pleasant stroll amongst the old streets and along the quayside. If you park at nearby Alresford Creek, you can walk along the river bank to Wivenhoe for a tasty lunch, before returning back to the creek the same way, or through the woods via the ruined Alresford church.
Whatever you choose to do – Just make sure you try The Black Buoy for your Dog-Friendly watering-hole !
